Equipment

All equipment is available from the centre at no charge for the duration of the course.

Climbing Supervisor Development Weekend – Peak District
Date: 8th and 9th September 2007
Venue: Day 1 Birchams Edge, Peak District
Day 2 Stanage Edge, Peak District
Cost: £88 (not including accommodation/food or travel)
Places: Maximum 10, Minumum 5

Course Aims

Aimed at Climbing Wall Supervisors/Trainees and SPA trainees, this weekend course aims to:

· Provide an introduction to crag climbing for beginners including climbing a range of routes – cracks slabs, lay-backs, mantle-shelfs etc.
· Offer a refresh opportunity for those with no recent experience
· Provide consolidation experience for trainees on Norfolk's Climbing Wall Supervisor programme
· Teach and consolidate best practice
· Provide logged climbs for progression to CWSA Assessment and SPA training
· Demonstrate the educational value of climbing as part of national curriculum.
· Give candidates experience of the peak as a safe and accessible outdoor venue for groups
· Have a good time on the rock

Arrangements

The course will be led by Chris Pretty, MIA, IML, BA (Hons), a qualified mountain instructor and expedition guide.

Day 1 1000 to 1700

Meet at Robin Hood PH car park, Birchams Edge. Walk to the edge for familiarisation with the crag. Set up top-roped and lead climbs on short, one and two move, routes. Progression, through the day, dependent on group and personal abilities along the crag to longer routes and introduction to abseiling.

Day 2 0930 to 1700

Meet at Stanage Edge car park (TBA). Walk into pre-defined area for progression to longer routes where by top-roping and leading we will explore different types of climbs and moves e.g. slabs, cracks, lay-backs and rock-overs.

Pre-requisites

Candidates must be 18 or over.
Have undertaken Climbing Wall Supervisor Training and/or assessment.
Have undertaken SPA training.


Accommodation, Food and Travel

Candidates will be required to arrange their own travel, accommodation and food. Information on local campsites and Bed and Breakfasts can be provided. There will be an opportunity to meet informally in the evening.

The scheme gives you the chance to hire a range of craft at 1.5hr sessions throughout the day.
Session times are:
1100 - 1230
1330 - 1500
1530 - 1700
1730 - 1900 (May - Aug only)

Our hire craft range includes:
Open Canoes £7.50 per 1.5hrs
Windsurfer £10.00 per 1.5hrs
Topper £12.00 per 1.5hrs
Oppie £12.00 per 1.5hrs
Laser £15.00 per 1.5hrs
Wayfarer £20.00 per 1.5hrs

All participants will need to register with the scheme which involves the completion of a simple form. We will then issue you with your individual registration card and identity number. With the exception of canoeing all of the craft will require a proven level of competance, so please bring along any qualifications you have. Otherwise staff will take you through a brief assessment to ensure that you are at the required level.
Once this is complete you are free to visit at any of the planned sessions without the need to complete any further forms. Just bring along your card.

The centre is situated within Whitlingham Country Park and is non-residential offering a range of outdoor and adventurous activities to young people and adults alike of all abilities.

Staff will be employed on a sessional basis where working hours will be advised on a weekly basis, subject to availability, and paid pro rata. There is no guarantee of work.

You will probably have at least one NGB award in the following:
Dinghy Sailing, Windsurfing, Kayaking, Canoeing, Orienteering, Climbing, Archery, Off road biking. Other NGB awards would be an advantage.
